Massive Crackdown on Child Marriage Continues in Assam: Over 800 Arrests Made .

In an unwavering commitment to eradicate the practice of child marriage, the Assam Police, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has embarked on a second round of intensive crackdowns. This determined effort has already resulted in the arrest of more than 800 individuals, and the numbers are expected to rise as the operation continues.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to make the announcement, declaring, “In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn.”

This operation marks the second sweeping crackdown against child marriage by the state government in the year. In February, the Assam government initiated an unprecedented punitive campaign targeting child marriage. In a span of just one month, a staggering 3,141 individuals were arrested. This included men who had entered into marriages with underage girls, as well as family members and religious leaders who were alleged facilitators of such practices.

The Assam government’s unwavering commitment to ending child marriage and protecting the rights and well-being of young individuals is evident through these rigorous actions. The crackdown sends a strong message that child marriage will not be tolerated in the state, and stringent measures will be taken to enforce the law.
