Ameen Sayani, iconic radio presenter and voice of Geetmala, dies at 91

The Indian Subcontinent mourns the loss of a broadcasting legend as Ameen Sayani, the beloved former radio announcer, passed away on Tuesday in Mumbai at the age of 91. Ameen Sayani, renowned for his iconic show Binaca Geetmala, captured the hearts of millions with his distinctive voice and charismatic persona.

The news of Ameen Sayani’s demise was confirmed by his son Rajil Sayani, who revealed that the veteran broadcaster suffered a heart attack on Tuesday night. Despite efforts by medical professionals at HN Reliance Hospital, Mumbai, Ameen Sayani could not be revived and was pronounced dead.

Born in Mumbai on December 21, 1932, Ameen Sayani carved a permanent place in the hearts of listeners with his signature greeting, “Namaskar bhaiyon aur behno, main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon” (Hello sisters and brothers, this is your friend Ameen Sayani). His illustrious career spanned decades, with his most notable contribution being the iconic show Binaca Geetmala, which aired since 1952, first on Radio Ceylon and later on Vividh Bharati (AIR), for over 42 years.

Ameen Sayani’s influence extended beyond the airwaves, as he contributed to over 54,000 radio programs and 19,000 spots/jingles since 1951. His versatility was also showcased in various films, including “Bhoot Bungla,” “Teen Devian,” “Boxer,” and “Qatl,” where he appeared as an announcer in pivotal events.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with social media flooded with messages honoring Ameen Sayani’s legacy. One fan tweeted, “Binaca Geetmala would always remain eternal. Thank you for the music and memories. RIP, Ameen Sayani Saab.” Another reminisced, “Have very fond memories of Binaca Geetmala during my childhood…Ameen Sayani was a legend at that time…rest in peace sir.”

Ameen Sayani’s funeral will take place on Thursday, with the family awaiting the arrival of relatives in Mumbai on Wednesday to bid farewell to the legendary broadcaster.

Ameen Sayani’s contribution to Indian radio broadcasting will forever be cherished, as his voice continues to echo in the hearts of millions, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s cultural landscape.
