In a significant development on the eve of the IPL 2024 season, MS Dhoni, the iconic former Indian captain, has decided to step down from his role as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Taking over the captaincy reins from the legendary Dhoni is Ruturaj Gaikwad, marking a new era for the franchise.
The announcement comes just a day ahead of the much-awaited IPL 2024 season opener, where CSK, the defending champions, are scheduled to clash with the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chepauk stadium.
This isn’t the first time Dhoni has relinquished the captaincy for CSK. Back in 2022, he had passed on the baton to Ravindra Jadeja, only to resume the role after a disappointing start for the team. However, this time, it appears to mark the definitive end of Dhoni’s illustrious tenure as CSK’s skipper.
Despite announcing his retirement from international cricket in August 2022, Dhoni has continued to grace the IPL with his presence. His leadership has been a constant for CSK since the inaugural IPL season in 2008, making him the sole remaining original captain from that batch.
As some cricketing greats bid farewell and others passed on the torch, Dhoni’s captaincy remained unwavering, symbolizing stability and success for CSK. Now, at the age of 42, Dhoni prepares for his IPL swansong, signifying the end of an era in the world of cricket.
